Testing the Limits

The writings of the prophets Jeremiah and Isaiah describe the actions of the Israelites that led to the Babylonian exile and the destruction of the temple in 587BC.   The waywardness o and rebelliousness of the people is often described in familial terms.   The people are described as disobedient children and an unfaithful wife because of their worship of other gods.  Although,  the faithfulness of God results in the ultimate redemption of the people, the processes of reconciliation are often reminiscent of patterns typically observed in relationships between parents and children.

Among the primary goals of infancy is the quest for independence and the appreciation of autonomy.  Babies are completely dependent upon others for almost all of their needs, but as they develop the skills of mobility and cognition, the connection to the world and others changes rapidly.   Sometimes these new skills are gained more quickly than they can be managed responsibly which can result in tremendous frustration for both parents and children.

Sturm und drang, or storm and stress, is a German phrase that is often used to describe the turbulence of relationships in which individual pursuits conflict with societal mores and expectations.  As a result of these common developmental phases, relationships between parents and children can become strained irreparably.   Estrangement that begins in adolescence may last for many, many years.  However, the basic identifications as parent and child remain forever.  Just as there are certain undeniable connections between parents and children, there’s also a connection between God and humanity that is rarely, permanently severed.

Jeremiah and Isaiah describe the ways that the love of God redeems rebellious children and even unfaithful spouses.   Among the most difficult lessons that Jesus teaches relate to forgiveness.   Jesus teaches that those who have been forgiven of egregious sins love with an even greater intensity (Luke 7:47).  As part of our ongoing 8 week study of Unforgettable Memories: Stories of Love, Laughter and Life, we will delve into the writings of Jeremiah and the lives of the people in exile.

We’re looking forward to seeing you, sharing with you, learning with you and laughing with you.   We’ll see you in worship Sunday morning.

In Christ,
