HYMN STORIES: The Songs We Sing
“Who You Say We Are”
This week we will be singing a new song in the 10:00 service. Who You Say We Are is a song that combines the two elements of Christian truth; believe and worship. We may even think of them as seperate units. Worship here and believe there is a sense that the two go hand-in-hand all of the time. And that the profound truth that God declares us to be sons and daughters, is something we believe and that enriches our worship experience. As the song says, the most we can say is “thank you.”
Too often we sing songs of worship that are overly and unnecessarily complicated. We get lost in trying to get the melody and the meaning down at the same time. Maybe it is enough, to sing songs and reflect on the most basic implications of our faith’s truth claims: that Jesus the Son brings us back to the Father, that we are indeed His sons and daughters, and that the most we can say is “thank you.”
The message and themes are; identity in God as song centers on the profound truth that God declares His believers to be His children, moving them from spiritual orphans and slaves to heirs, that to worship and believe go hand-in-hand; recognizing what God has done on the cross naturally leads to a posture of gratitude and the simple response of saying "thank you" and scriptural echoes where the lyrics draw heavily on concepts of grace, adoption, and calling out to God as "Abba Father".
Rejoice Christian as we celebrate our adoption into the family of God. As we worship through this song make a joyful noise as children of God!
