The Message and the Mission

Among the most powerful messages of Easter is the realization that the Resurrection does not depend upon us. Following the crucifixion of Christ, many of the disciples were afraid that the Roman authorities would be looking for them while others were despairing that their hopes had been defeated. The news of the empty tomb provided both a message and a mission for each of the followers of Jesus. Christ is risen!!  Neither death nor despair have the last word. Christ is risen indeed!

Our next church-wide study will include a book by Ray Vander Laan entitled “The Mission of Jesus: Triumph of God’s Kingdom in a World in Chaos” that explores some of the places Jesus traveled and the reactions of the disciples. The book is designed to be a 5-week study. We will begin Sunday, April 14 and end Sunday, May 19  (classes will not meet on Mother’s Day).  Books are available at the church and the Kindle version will allow participants to immediately begin delving into the material. There will also be an accompanying DVD to provide an overview of each week’s topic, so even if you’ve not been able to read ahead, you’ll have some information regarding the discussion.

During the next few weeks, the worship services will build upon the material presented in the book and will highlight the post-Resurrection narrative. We’ll look forward to seeing you in worship and in class.

In Christ,
Jon McCoy
