Merry Sunshine Update
October 19, 2026
Welcome to our September News! We have had a wonderful start to our school year, getting to know one another and exploring our classroom centers.
This month, our curriculum focused on the letter A for Apple. To bring our learning to life, our little scientists and chefs rolled up their sleeves for some delicious, hands-on baking! We made homemade apple crisp and blended fresh applesauce.
While these activities were incredibly fun and delicious, cooking and baking with preschoolers is actually a vital part of our early childhood environment. Here is a look at the important developmental facts behind why we cook in preschool:
• Mathematical Foundations: Measuring, counting apple slices, and comparing sizes introduce early concepts of volume and concrete number sense.
• Scientific Exploration: Baking lets children observe physical changes firsthand while leveraging sensory learning through scents, textures, and tastes.
• Fine Motor Development: Stirring, pouring, chopping, and sprinkling build the hand strength and dexterity necessary for learning to write.
• Language & Literacy: Following recipes from top to bottom teaches sequential thinking and expands descriptive vocabulary
• Social-Emotional Cooperation: Sharing a recipe teaches patience and turn-taking while building confidence through a successful team project.
Thank you for supporting our hands-on learning journeys. We cannot wait to see what else we will discover together as the autumn season continues!
