HYMN STORIES: The Songs We Sing

“My Jesus”

We sing the song in worship  “My Jesus” at the 10:00 service.  It is a song of personal testimony of the relationship we have with Jesus, our Lord and Savior.  The song was born through a tragedy in 2017 when at age 15, Anne Wilson lost her 23-year-old brother, Jacob, in a car accident.

The song highlights a personal, intimate relationship with Jesus developed through grief, with the title originating from her journals where she wrote "my Jesus" to describe her reliance on God during that tragedy.  During the grieving process, Wilson realized that through her journaling, she consistently referred to God as "My Jesus," indicating a deeply personal, intimate relationship rather than just a distant, theological concept. Wilson shares that she heard God calling her to music at her brother's funeral, where she sang for the first time in public. Co-written with Jeff Pardo and Matthew West, the song serves as a testimony to God's ability to bring hope out of pain.

The message of the song aims to remind listeners that Jesus meets them right where they are, offering a personal connection to help overcome life's greatest struggles.  The song became a #1 hit on the Billboard Christian Airplay Chart in 2021. Next time we sing it in worship, lead out with a strong voice as one who knows the King of Kings as a close friend.
